Assessment and rehabilitation

Care based on clinical need and personal goals

Physiotherapy may be appropriate where an eligible condition affects movement, strength, balance, mobility, confidence or participation. The assessment determines the relevant findings and options; no result can be guaranteed.

Movement and mobility

Assessment may consider walking, transfers, balance, joint movement, strength and functional activities relevant to you.

Injury or surgery rehabilitation

A plan may support recovery after an eligible musculoskeletal injury or operation when physiotherapy is clinically necessary and covered.

Maintaining function

Education and appropriate exercise may help maintain capacity and support safe participation in daily activities.

DVA pathway

What needs to be confirmed before treatment

Card and referral

  • the Veteran Card must be current
  • Gold Card and White Card coverage are not identical
  • White Card treatment must relate to an accepted or otherwise eligible condition
  • a valid referral is required for allied health treatment, subject to DVA rules
  • some services or circumstances may need prior financial authorisation

Clinic acceptance

  • confirm the treating physiotherapist is eligible and currently accepting DVA referrals
  • provide the referral before the first appointment where possible
  • confirm whether any service or cost falls outside DVA arrangements
  • tell the clinic about treatment already received in the current cycle
  • do not assume an online private appointment will be converted to DVA billing
No blanket “bulk-billed” promise: DVA-funded treatment and private billing are different pathways. Eligibility, referral validity, provider acceptance and any required authorisation must be checked before treatment.

From referral to review

A practical treatment-cycle pathway

1

Obtain a referral

Your usual GP, medical specialist or an eligible hospital-discharge clinician may provide a referral under DVA rules.

2

Call the clinic

The team checks the card, referral, current provider acceptance and appointment availability.

3

Attend assessment

Your physiotherapist assesses relevant function and agrees on clinically appropriate goals and care.

4

Review and report

Progress is reviewed and the clinician communicates with the referrer as required under the treatment-cycle arrangements.

DVA’s general allied health notes describe a treatment cycle as up to 12 sessions or one year, whichever occurs first, with specific exceptions and referral arrangements. Your GP and provider determine what is clinically necessary; the clinic does not promise a fixed number of appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Before a DVA physiotherapy appointment

Do I need a referral?

Yes, a valid referral is generally required for DVA-funded allied health treatment. Call the clinic before booking so the referral and current provider arrangements can be checked.

What is the difference between a Gold Card and a White Card?

A Gold Card generally covers clinically necessary treatment available under DVA arrangements. A White Card has more limited coverage, including accepted conditions and specified non-liability health care. DVA or your referrer can confirm your individual entitlement.

Can I book through the standard online calendar?

Call first. The standard Halaxy link is also used for private appointments and may not collect the information needed to verify a DVA referral or billing pathway.

Will DVA pay for every physiotherapy service?

No. Treatment must meet DVA eligibility and clinical requirements, relate to covered needs and comply with referral, treatment-cycle and any authorisation rules.

What should I bring?

Bring your current Veteran Card, referral, medication or medical information relevant to the appointment, and any useful reports or imaging already available.

Source and review note: Referral and card wording was checked against DVA’s Notes for Allied Health Providers dated 3 June 2026. Clinic acceptance is deliberately conditional because no public DVA provider register confirmed each Moorebank practitioner. Prepared 10 August 2026. Information is general and does not determine entitlement or replace individual advice.
